The oil and gas industry operates in environments where lightning protection isn't just about equipment damage or downtime, it's about preventing catastrophic events. A lightning strike to an inadequately protected facility in a classified hazardous area can ignite flammable atmospheres, trigger explosions, and cause loss of life. The regulatory and liability consequences of inadequate protection in this sector are absolute.
Aetheric provides lightning protection and earthing engineering across the oil and gas spectrum, offshore platforms, onshore refineries, storage terminals, LNG facilities, and pipelines. Our designs integrate lightning protection with the sector's existing safety frameworks: hazardous area classification, cathodic protection, bonding networks, and industry-specific standards including API RP 2003.
The Oil & Gas Lightning Challenge
Hazardous Area Compliance
Facilities handling flammable liquids, gases, and vapours are classified into hazardous zones (Zone 0, 1, 2 per IEC 60079 / AS/NZS 60079) where ignition sources are controlled. Lightning protection and SPDs must be rated to maintain hazardous area integrity, explosion-proof or increased-safety enclosure requirements, with every component within classified areas appropriate for its zone classification.
Cathodic Protection Integration
Oil and gas facilities extensively use cathodic protection to prevent corrosion of pipelines, tanks, and buried structures. Lightning protection earthing must integrate with, not compromise, cathodic protection systems. Our earthing designs address potential conflicts between cathodic protection and lightning earthing, implementing isolation or decoupling measures where required.
Offshore Atmospheric Exposure
Offshore platforms face extreme lightning exposure combined with aggressive marine environments that accelerate corrosion. Conductor materials, connection methods, and maintenance accessibility account for offshore conditions. Earthing in marine or saline soil presents particular challenges requiring expert design.
Tank Farm & Storage Protection
Storage tanks containing flammable products need specific protection, direct strikes to tank shells, floating roof seals, vapour release points. RSM modelling verifies coverage across complex tank farm geometries; SPD coordination protects instrumentation, level monitoring, and fire suppression control.
Pipeline & Remote Facility Protection
Pipeline valve stations, metering facilities, and remote compressor stations are often located where earthing infrastructure is limited and soil resistivity high. Our soil resistivity testing and expert earthing design address these locations; SPD coordination protects the SCADA and telemetry critical to pipeline operations.
